Cardiac Surgery Department

The Department of Cardiac Surgery is one of the largest and most developed cardiac surgical facility in the country working under the leadership of Professor Zafar Tufail.

Each year our team of highly qualified and renowned surgeons operates on more than 2000 patients of all age groups. These operations include surgery for coronary artery diseae with or without the use of heart lung machine, operations to treat complications of heart attack, causing holes or leaks in heart, oprations on heart valves both repair and replacements and operations for the common birth defects of heart.

Our staff works with the modern surgical techniques, equipment and devices. There are 09 modern operation theaters and 60 beds Intensive Care Unit and one Pre-0perative reception area. A team of senior doctors and residents is on call 24 hours to attend emergencies or any post-operative need.

Ischaemic Heart Disease

Congenital Heart Disease

Operations for treatment of PDA, ASD, VSD and tetralogy of Fallot, coarctation of aorta and other complex anomalies.

Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

There are six Intensive Care Units with a total capacity of 60 beds to look after post operative patients. Patients from the operation theater are transfered to these units which are fully equipped with all facilities including critical care Monitoring, artificial life support facilities and advanced cardivascular support.

Staff nurses working in ICU are specially trained for intensive care and have experience of 5-10 years. Team of cardiac surgical and anesthesia residents and consultants provide round the clock coverage to these critical care areas and afford prompt support whenever needed.

Pediatric Intensive Care Unit

Pediatric ICU was started due to growing number of pediatric patients referred to Punjab Institute of Cardiology. With the development of a separate pediatric intensive care unit with specialized facilities, the burden on the adult care units has been shared.

Private Cardiac Surgery Ward

The Private Cardiac Surgery Ward comprises 18 rooms which are fully equipped with all necessary equipment, modern beds and utilities. Comfortable environment with vigilant care is provided to private patients before going for surgery and after they are received from surgical intensive care units.

General Cardiac Surgery Ward

This section comprises 8 wards with 28 beds capacity. Patients supported by Government funds, social welfare support, individuals on self support or semi private patients are provided excellent facilities for pre operative and post operative cardiac surgical treatment. These are also well equipped and efficiently nursed.

Irfan Block (Pre-Operative Ward)

This block has been raised by donations and caters for patients from less priviliged areas and affords 12 beds providing similar services and support as in other cardiac surgical blocks.
